Dorel Rotar, Licensed Acupuncturist, checking another patient's pulse in the Sacramento clinicDoes acupuncture hurt?  What does it feel like?

Acupuncture treatments are usually very relaxing, even blissful. Acupuncture needles feel nothing at all like getting a shot. They are hair-thin, and you may not even notice the insertion. Once a needle has been inserted, people often feel some sensation: warmth, tingling, or a light buzzing.  After treatment, you may notice a slight tingling sensation.

How quickly does it work?  How many treatments do I need?

The answer to this question varies greatly from person to person. If your chief problem is acute, and you are generally very healthy, only one or two treatments may be necessary. If your problem is long-standing, resolution may take several months of regular treatment. Usually, six to ten weekly or bi-weekly visits comprise a full course of treatment. Many patients experience a noticeable improvement within three treatments.

Many patients are surprised to learn that treatment requires also lifestyle changes.  Dietary or lifestyle changes are often strongly recommended (salads/raw foods, alcohol, etc.)  Some cases of chronic diseases may require lifestyle changes in order to maximize the effectiveness of the acupuncture treatments.  These changes will vary from patient to patient.

Are needles sanitary?  Do you ever re-use needles?

The needles for your treatment are absolutely sanitary and are never re-used.

How deep do the needles go in?

It depends on the body type and the point location.  Some people are very sensitive compare to others, other points are close to the bone, etc.
